My newly bought Hamster may have "fleas"?

I recently bough a Campbell Russian Male Hamster and he has fur loss on his back-end. He bites and scratches a lot which usually means the animal has fleas. But on an animal this size the fleas should be fairly visible, but upon closer inspection I didn't see any. I was wondering if there was any way to clean such a small animal - he is only a few months old and is about 2 inches long. Whatever pest he has, they have gotten on me and now I'm starting to scratch too. Does anyone know a good method to clean him / rid my apartment of these "fleas".
