Hole in septic tank-does it have to be fixed?

I was cleaning the dirt off my septic tank,its getting drained tomorrow,and I noticed a small hole about 1 inch in diameter in the top of the tank.Can I patch this or mabey attach a piece of galvanized metal over the top?Any suggestions?
