You could easily do that in the US emby in KL. As long as you could show that you have at least 6 months validity when you get into Malaysia at the immigration counter, that is more than enough. If you are going to be in KL, you could just renew it immediately at the emby. In the US, you might have to mail it in through the USPS and knowing how the pport process backlog in the US, you might have to wait up to 9 months to get your pport. In Malaysia, things are done much more efficiently than the US. Just renew in Malaysia.
